Very excited to catch with with the one and only Celia Kyle this week. She is the USA Today best-selling author of Dragons of Preor series. But more importantly, she is HILARIOUS. Hope you enjoy the interview!
Fiona Blake: What made you decide to take the plunge and start writing your first novel?
Celia Kyle: I actually started as a reviewer and I was reviewing 15 books a week for sites like The Romance Studio and Just Erotic Romance Reviews. I LOVED reviewing (it meant FREE BOOKS) but there were also books that I wanted to read, but they weren’t written yet. Know what I mean? I wanted certain levels of utter ridiculousness (hedgehog shifter anyone?) that I wasn’t finding. So… I wrote it. And my first several books were so horribad that they can never recover from their absolute horribleness. If I was allowed to burn things in my little subdivision, they’d be the first thing in the burn barrel. Seriously.
Fiona: What writers inspire you?
Celia: Gah, so many! The writer that really, really got me going and inspired me is Shelly Laurenston. She made me laugh and cry and I wanted to DO THAT. All of it. I wanted to be a short fluffy version of Shelly.
Fiona: How do you incorporate your life into your books?
Celia: Every clumsy moment is me. Every love of all things chocolate, cake or ice cream is me. Every jiggle, jaggle, and “oops my boob fell out” is me. Yes, my life is that amazingly clumsy yet awesome.
Fiona: What is your writing process?
Celia: Every day I get up around 8-ish. (Earlier if Katie Kat demands treats) Then there’s breakfast, hubby snuggles and then I lock myself in my office. That’s where the magic happens! Or… that’s where I surf facebook. After that, I either pull out my outline for a current book or get to work on a new one. I’ve got a few pdfs I print out and scribble all over. Including lovely nuggets such as “Banging means tied 4-evah and babies. They bang!” Very detailed and official, right? And that is an actual quote off of one of the sheets in front of me right this second. As for ideas… I talk a lot of them out with friends which is when they can smack me down or cheer me on. (Mina Carter, by the way, always cheers me on no matter the crazy. See the aforementioned hedgehogs.)
Fiona: What is the best sentence you’ve ever published?
Celia: Eek, my best sentence… Honestly, I think one of my faves is from No Ifs, Ands, or Bears About It. (Side note: Authors, never use titles this long. It’s so killer and you really get tired of saying it.) It’s just an example of ridiculousness. "A bear cub sat in her pantry.” You read it and your mind immediately goes… Wait, what?
Fiona: What exciting projects do you have in the works?
Celia: So many amazings! I think my most exciting is this a little baby scifi short story titled “Hatched”. I’ve jotted down notes and plan on beginning it soon, but readers familiar with the Dragons of Preor series will totally get the joke when they find out that it’s about Lana and Taulan.
