Note: This is a quick repost Medium. Hi everybody, I’m Fiona Blake and I’m a new romance author looking for wisdom and wanting to learn from the best. Join me in my quest!
Last week I spoke with Melanie Harlow, the USA Today bestselling author of theFrenched series and Man Candy. I was lucky to catch up with her while she was on vacation in Paris. Enjoy!
Fiona Blake: How did you start writing?
Melanie Harlow: After dreaming about it for years, I finally got serious about it in 2010. I put my butt in the chair and just starting writing! And I gave myself permission to write total crap.
Fiona: What writers inspire you?
Melanie: I am a huge fan of women’s fiction writers like Liane Moriarty, Jojo Moyes, Anita Shreve, Kate Morton, Emily Giffin, and Elin Hilderbrand. For romance, I used to read a ton of Lavryle Spencer, and her books remain read-again favorites for me.
Fiona: How do you incorporate your life into your books?
Melanie: There is something of me in every character, male and female, I think. Thoughts, habits, quirks, dreams…and of course I set books where I live so I’m always writing about places I know (except for Paris! I don’t live there but I visit!).
Fiona: What is your writing process?
Melanie: Ideas come from everywhere and anywhere. If I’m writing a book, I’m very committed to my daily word count, which is usually about 2000 words a day. I try hard to get them done between 8:30 AM and 3:30 PM, while my kids are at school. I try to limit social media during those days, but it’s hard! I talk a lot about my writing process in blog posts here.
Fiona: What is the best sentence that you have ever published?
Melanie: The End…does that count?
Fiona: What exciting projects do you have in the works?
Melanie: I took July off, but I’m working on a companion book to MAN CANDY that will release in October! :)
