I can barely contain my excitement. This week I was able to catch up with one of my biggest inspirations, Penelope Ward. She is the bestselling author of books such as Stepbrother Dearest and Stuck-up Suit. If you're not already a fan, be sure to check out her books!
Fiona Blake: What made you decide to take the plunge and start writing your first novel?
Penelope Ward: I was extremely bored and uninspired in my late thirties. I needed a change and some excitement in my life and took the plunge one day, never looking back. I was an avid reader and that developed into writing. I knew no one in the business taught myself how to self-publish by reading about it. Eleven novels later, here I am.
Fiona: What writers inspire you?
Penelope: Colleen Hoover, Vi Keeland, Julie A. Richman, EL James
Fiona: How do you incorporate your life into your books?
Penelope: I don’t! My books are a complete fantasy and an escape from real life. I did incorporate an autistic side character into a couple of my books. My daughter, who is twelve, has severe autism, so that would be the only thing that comes to mind.
Fiona: What is your writing process?
Penelope: I fantasize/daydream a lot about the story before I start outlining. I outline at least the first three quarters of the book before I start writing. That process is at least a month before the writing even begins. My typical day is to get the kids ready for school, followed by the gym, then writing for a couple of hours while juggling other business. The day flies by pretty fast before the kids get home. I spend a good deal of time on social media as well at night.
Fiona: What is the best sentence you’ve ever published?
Penelope: The heartbeat is the purest form of honesty.
Fiona: What exciting projects do you have in the works?
Penelope: Vi Keeland and I are co-writing our fourth novel together that will publish in the Spring. I am also working on my own next standalone which will likely publish before that in early 2017.
